Does My Visa and Mastercard Work in the Netherlands?
If you’re planning to visit or move to the Netherlands, one question might pop into your mind quickly: “Will my Visa or Mastercard work there?” The short answer is yes, but with some important caveats.
Can I Use My Credit Card in the Netherlands?
Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted globally, and you’ll generally be able to use them in places like airports, hotels, and tourist hotspots. However, the Netherlands is slightly different from many other countries in Europe: it’s largely a debit card culture.
Many supermarkets, shops, and even restaurants in the Netherlands only accept Dutch debit cards (called pinpas). While acceptance of international credit cards is improving, it’s not guaranteed in everyday places like Albert Heijn or HEMA.
What Are My Alternatives?
- Get a Dutch Bank Account: Opening a local account with a Maestro-compatible debit card is often the easiest solution for residents.
- OVpay and Public Transport: Recently, Dutch public transport now accepts contactless Visa and Mastercard payments, making travel more convenient.
- Always Carry Some Cash: Especially in smaller towns or markets, having euros on hand is a safe backup.
Good to Know
Some ATMs in the Netherlands may charge foreign cardholders a withdrawal fee, so check with your home bank about international charges and limits. It’s also worth enabling foreign usage on your cards before traveling.
Useful Tips
- Look for the Visa/Mastercard logo before assuming your card will be accepted.
- Have a Dutch friend? They can help you set up Tikkie or other payment apps commonly used in the Netherlands.
- Don’t rely solely on credit cards—use them as a backup.
