Open Tuinen Dagen: Explore Hidden Gardens in Amsterdam
Each June, Open Tuinen Dagen (Open Garden Days) invites the public to discover a more secret side of Amsterdam—its hidden canal house gardens. For one weekend, these normally private green spaces open their gates, revealing serene oases tucked behind the city's historic façades.
What to Expect
The event usually includes access to around 25 private gardens, many of which belong to 17th-century canal houses in the heart of the city. The gardens range from elegant formal layouts to romantic, overgrown retreats, giving a unique perspective on Amsterdam’s architectural and horticultural history.
When and Where
Open Tuinen Dagen takes place every June, with exact dates announced annually. Most gardens are located along the central canals—Herengracht, Keizersgracht, and Prinsengracht. The event is organized by the Museum Van Loon, one of the participating locations.
Tickets and Access
A single ticket grants access to all participating gardens for the full weekend. Tickets can be purchased in advance online or at the Museum Van Loon. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes—you’ll be walking between locations—and bring a camera!
Why Expats Should Go
This event is a rare opportunity to step inside the world of historic Dutch living and appreciate the hidden beauty behind Amsterdam’s elegant exteriors. It’s also a peaceful, refreshing way to explore the city beyond its usual tourist spots.
