Flower Shows and Flower Parades in the Netherlands

A Blooming Dutch Tradition

The Netherlands is world-famous for its flowers, especially tulips. Every spring, towns across the country burst into bloom with colorful flower shows and parades that attract thousands of visitors. These events celebrate Dutch horticultural heritage and are must-sees for expats and tourists alike.

Bloemencorso: The Flower Parade

The highlight of the season is the Bloemencorso, or flower parade. Dozens of floats are covered in fresh flowers—primarily dahlias and tulips—and paraded through towns in spectacular fashion. Each float is designed around a unique theme and constructed by local volunteers.

Top Flower Parades to Visit

  • Bloemencorso Bollenstreek: Held in April, this parade runs from Noordwijk to Haarlem and is one of the most famous in the country.
  • Bloemencorso Zundert: Known as the largest flower parade in the world, this takes place in early September and uses only dahlias.
  • Bloemencorso Valkenswaard: Another dahlia-filled spectacle in the south of the Netherlands, typically held in August.

Flower Shows Worth Visiting

  • Keukenhof Gardens (Lisse): Known as the Garden of Europe, Keukenhof opens each spring for 8 weeks and showcases over 7 million flowers.
  • Floriade Expo: Although only held every 10 years (next in 2032), it’s a massive international horticultural exhibition not to miss.

Tips for Attending

  • Arrive early to grab a good spot—popular parades get very busy.
  • Check local websites for updated event dates and weather info.
  • Public transport is often the easiest way to reach the event.
